EVENTS AT THE FORT WORTH NATURE CENTER
The following events are scheduled to be held at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge during the months of October, November, and December. All are open to the public. All programs meet at the Hardwicke Interpretive Center, 9601 Fossil Ridge Road, unless otherwise indicated. Programs with a Ĺ require pre-registration. Programs marked with a é are wheelchair accessible. Members of the Friends of the Nature Center (FONC) receive reduced or free program fees for most programs. ĹCanoe Tour: Glide up to a great blue heron. Check out a wood duck. Visit an active beaver lodge. On this 3-hour canoe tour, visitors get close to nature while paddling along the West Fork of the Trinity River. Sunscreen, water and weather appropriate clothing (shoes that can get wet) are recommended. Lifejackets, paddles and canoes provided. Children must be 5 years or older. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children. Register by Thursday preceding the tour date. $15/adult, $10/child/FONC $10/$6.

Natural Guard: Help keep the Nature Center beautiful by volunteering for the Natural Guard. Natural Guard members assist Refuge staff in trail maintenance, brush clearing, bridge building and much more! Please call 237-1111 for information on projects and meeting places. FREE.

Naturalist-led Nature Hikes: Stop in and join a naturalist for a leisurely hike on the trails of the FWNC&R. Hikes feature current natural history events such as blooming wildflowers, commonly seen insects, birds and other animals and current projects on the Refuge. Water and appropriate clothing suggested. (All ages). $5/FONC FREE.

Looking for Fall colors: Cool nights, morning fog and crisp clear days: it must be Fall. It’s time to check out the changing colors of the leaves. Oaks, ashes and sumac won’t disappoint you on this hike. $5/FONC FREE.

é*Bison: Stampede your way down to the Nature Center to get a close look at this giant mammal of the prairie. Hear why early explorer confused them as part lion, part camel, and part cow. Find out why they are a symbol of the American West as you get to see them up close and personal. Meet at the Bison Range gate along Buffalo Road. FREE. |

Canoe Fest: Come out and enjoy a bit of canoeing on your own on the quiet waters around Greer Island. Canoes, paddles, and life jackets provided. Children must be 5 years or older and accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents must sign a liability waiver for minor children. NO REGISTRATION NEEDED, FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED. Meet at Greer Island. $5/FONC $3.

b>Wild Plum/Fork Tail Creek Excursion: Prairie, plum thickets and a creek snaking through the woods are all part of this hike. You will look for armadillo diggings and with a little luck migrating Fall birds will be part of this experience. $5/FONC FREE.

Beaver Trail: Allow yourself a chance to observe the wonders and engineering feats of beavers. Hike along with us as we take a closer look at a beaver’s lodge and cuttings while enjoying the sights of the Riverbottom trail. Find out why they call them the “busy beavers.” $5/FONC FREE.

Trees and Leaves: It’s that time of the year when red oaks and the sycamore trees change color. Beautiful shades of red, oranges, and yellow landscape the refuge. Take a leisurely hike with us and see the changes that nature brings to us in fall. We'll hike the refuge's Deer Mouse Trail to explore trees and their leaves as they prepare for winter. $5/FONC FREE.

Whether you are a student writing a report on animals or just a nature lover, this program will help you save time by teaching natural history search techniques and introducing you to some of the best nature sites on the Web! Reading the Wild: Scats, tracks, and other animals signs are left everyday by our refuge residents. Join us in answering, “who was here?” as we hike on the Wild Plum Trail. Get a general idea of the animal’s signs that are commonly encountered on the Refuge. $5/FONC FREE.

Exploring the Oak Motte: Named for its clumps of live oak trees, this hike will take you to one of the Refuges more interesting habitats. One pleasant surprise on this trek will be the view from Far View Prairie. $5/FONC FREE.
